Penguins lead in local US TV ratings

Big surprise here...

The Pittsburgh Penguins ranked No. 1 in local television ratings among United States-based National Hockey League teams during 2010, according to Nielsen’s “State of the Media: Year in Sports 2010,” published in the Sports Business Journal.  The Penguins had an 8.0 rating on FSN Pittsburgh last year. Rounding out the top five were the Buffalo Sabres at 6.3; the Detroit Red Wings at 3.9; the Chicago Blackhawks at 2.6; and Boston Bruins at 2.3.

Canadian TV ratings for NHL All-Star weekend

The new NHL all-star game format scored high ratings for CBC.
An average audience of 2.389 million viewers tuned in Sunday as Team Lidstrom defeated Team Staal 11-10.
Viewership for the event peaked at 3.35 million late in the third period with Team Staal pressing for a tie.
Sunday's average ratings for the all-star game were the network's best in since 1999, when it drew 1.67 million viewers. CBC drew an average of 1.527 million viewers for the 2009 all-star game in Montreal. (There was no all-star game last year because of the Vancouver Olympics.)
This year's all-star game featured a fantasy draft instead of the stale conference versus conference format. The team's were picked by Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom and Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal.
CBC said Saturday night's skills competition drew an average audience of 2.446 million. The previous high came in 2009, when 1.371 million viewers tuned into the game in Montreal.
Friday night's fantasy draft averaged 1.5 million viewers on TSN. The audience peaked at 1.9 million late in the broadcast as Toronto Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel was selected last.
The buzz on twitter was also apparent as I counted 9 different worldwide trending topics during the NHL All-Star skills competition.  I didn't count up the number for the NHL All-Star game itself, but I know there were a number of worldwide trending topics during the game as well.  An all around good weekend for the NHL as we wait for the tv ratings for Versus in the United States.
